I finished Haruki Murakami's Novelist as an Vocation a few days ago because it was on hand, and I'm halfway through a book of Kafka's short stories which has been pretty engrossing. I've noticed a few social and cultural subtleties that probably went over my head when I was exposed to him in school, and the psychological and social conflicts in his stories hit much more viscerally this time around. In the Penal Colony in particular has been on my mind for a few days since I finished it. It's interesting to draw parallels between the events of the story and generational shifts in (western) otaku culture, or the fates of small internet communities and their users as the prevailing internet culture has been superceded over the years.
Anyways, Murakami's essays piqued my interest in his novels so I'll probably check one of those out next. I had seen them mentioned as inspiration for Haibane Renmei and Penguindrum IIRC so it may be interesting to look for the connection and try to pick out their influence.

Things have been really hard lately, but I'm doing my best to crawl along.

I had a really unexpected word of news in that someone I know has a house I can live in abroad, for a while. It's been my dream to travel, so I'm looking forward to it a lot. I don't know what to expect, but I hope it gives me a new perspective on things, and maybe alleviates my suffering a little. I really need a change to my status quo, so I'm excited to live a little and see a new place, even if I am a bit nervous about it still. The exchange rate is really good too, so I don't need to spend too much.

Good luck I hope you still find time to post with your friends on nen.

Been going for about a week now, took me a while to set up everything. It feels like the vocab deck I'm using is much better than the one I originally started with since it has audio and example sentences, and now I don't have to work through hundreds of unreviewed cards all at once. Most of the words I already know so its pretty easy so far.

Not sure what to do about grammar though. I also remember text hooking for visual novels being a pain for when I try to tackle a raw one again.

>>2996
Neat I've always thought it would be fun to read a Murakami or Ranpo novel in the original language. I really like Kafka's books too, The Castle and The Trial are some of my favorites.

>>3001
That sounds nice I've basically lived in the same square mile my whole life. I tried moving to a new place 3 years ago this month, but covid messed that up. Maybe I should give it another try…

Oh I'm not stressed at all. It's true going to a foreign place'll make you feel a little awkward, but I'm more excited than anything to see something new. I should still have internet in some form or another, so it's not like I won't be able to post with fellow nenners. I'll definitely post some pictures when I get there if I see any good sights!

>>3026
It's all good, I think that nenfriend is probably just worried that I'll be in a potentially unsafe, internetless country or something like that.

>>3027
>I've basically lived in the same square mile my whole life.
That's kind of been me up until now, too. I've heard travel is supposed to be good for the soul, and I like pretty places, so I'd decided to stop waiting for things to get better and just go for it. If it's within your means to do so, I definitely think it's something most people should try at least once even if it's only for a few days.

I've been trying to do a better job flossing and just realized I could use the floss threaders between my teeth at the gumline instead of spending multiple minutes trying to twist it through the bar i have. this is going to make it much easier to keep up the habit since that was always what frustrated me and made me stop bothering.

 No.3294

I just use the pick things for the front teeth with the bar, should I floss with the threader like you?

like toothpicks? I dont think those can get under the gums which is what you try to do with floss to get rid of the bacteria that grows there

Trying to get /fit/ and shed some pounds. Been eating less by incorporating more protein in my diet along with veggies. Gradually cutting the sugar to a minimum and the only drinks I have are milk, water, and tea. Working great so far. I do some exercise too.
Also been learning japanese off and on. I need to start my anki reps and stick to them this time.

I could not possibly tell you or it would wreck havoc upon this peaceful land. The fertile and pleasant land that is nen would be converted into a battlefield between the forces of good and evil. I love running its one of my favorite exercises to do.
Be careful when you're starting out since your heart and lungs will strengthen faster than your legs(especially ankles and knees) so its easy to not feel tired but then hurt your legs, make sure to start with low distance and slowly grow it.

I've decided on a short-term goal. Becoming overweight. I remember imagining being obese with muscle for a long time. I don't want to go that far, but it'd be fun to tell people that I'm overweight despite not being fat at all these days.
I've been about 5-10lbs off of it for a long time now, so if I just start eating a little more and getting some more exercise in, maybe I'll build that extra bit of muscle pretty fast.

I read somewhere that you sleep better if you don't eat for some hours before sleeping so I stopped eating after 19:00 which cut out most of my snacks and made me lose some weight.
